What is the most affordable but not ghetto place to live in the sanfransico bay area?

I want to spend 700-1000 a month on rent. I was hoping for somewhere in the middle region of the bay area but any suggestions of other places would be great too and taken into consideration. I dont want to live anywhere to ghetto or full of crime though. I heard oakland was mostly bad but heard it had some good parts too. Any help would be great!
