How have Microscopes added to our knowledge?

I'm trying to write a science fiction story which reveals the negative aspect of scientific advancement and need to know what the microscope has done in order to do so. So really I just need a list in chronological order of everything it has done to enhance our knowledge.Thanks heaps!
