What is the symbolic meaning of these animals?

I'm reading a book called Vampire Academy and in it several animal have gotten killed. The animals so far are a fox, a raven, a rabbit, and a mourning dove. I was wondering the symbolic meaning of these animals, and if them being killed had any other symbolic meaning. Please help!
